Saint Vincent de Paul

HOLY CROSS CONFERENCE AND SS PHILIP AND JAMES CONFERENCE

‘Turning concern into action’

The St Vincent de Paul Society is an international Christian charity which befriends those in need, and provides them with practical assistance – social or financial. It has been established in England and Wales since 1844 and there are currently over 10,000 members involved in its work.

The SVP at Holy Cross and Ss Philip & James Churches are working together during the COVID-19 pandemic to support isolated and vulnerable people in Bedford.  At present unable to carry out our core role of visiting people in their homes, we are regularly keeping in touch with them by telephone.  We aim to ‘lend a listening ear’ and also to learn if they have any particular requirements with which we can help.

Some of the requirements may be small but become problems under current circumstances.  We have some young members in the Conferences who frequently supply vital items of shopping or collect prescriptions from the chemist.

Both conferences are also involved with ‘knock and drop’ food parcels.  Our younger members have been actively helping and we were in the fortunate position of being able to donate financially to the food parcel scheme.
